Georgia Watermelon Queen to Visit Fulton County’s Riverside Farmer’s Market in Roswell | Print |

Fulton County Cooperative Extension invites everyone to celebrate Watermelon Day on July 21st

The Georgia Watermelon Queen will visit the Riverside Farmer’s Market on Saturday, July 21 from 8:00am – 12:00pm.  Her visit is part of her official duties to welcome summer and to educate the community about the nutritional and economical value of watermelons.  Fulton County Cooperative Extension operates the Riverside Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning in the parking lot of Roswell City Hall located at 38 Hill Street in Roswell, Georgia.

Laurel Higginbotham, the 2012 Watermelon Queen, will lead a fun-filled day for the entire family.  She will be handing out coloring books, promotional watermelon items as well as officiate watermelon eating and seed spitting contests.  A children’s tent, delicious made-to-order crepes, live music and a radon information table staffed by Fulton County Cooperative Extension Agents will add to the festivities.

Every Saturday, the Riverside Farmer’s Market attracts over 2,000 shoppers seeking locally grown produce and products provided by over 40 ready to serve vendors.  To assure the freshest fruits and vegetables possible, farmers are carefully screened. The criteria for farmers are they must all be growing the products themselves (no resellers allowed) and they must be growing the produce within 100 miles of Roswell.

In addition to operating the farmer’s market, Fulton County Cooperative Extension hosts monthly classes on topics such as financial management, diabetes and gardening. Classes are held in various locations throughout the county.  Call (404) 332-2400 for more information about the Riverside Farmer’s Market.
