Fulton County working to stop domestic violence | Print |

October is Domestic Violence Month

The odds are terrible.  Nearly one in three women report being physically or sexually abused by a husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives.  Each day in the US more that three women are murdered by their current or former husbands or boyfriends.  It gets even worse.  Georgia is ranked 10th nationally for its rate of men killing women.  It can happen to anyone, at any age, no matter what gender, race or religion they are.  Domestic violence also occurs in same sex relationships.

In response to the growing incidents of domestic violence, Fulton County is now part of state-wide domestic violence task force which includes the initiation, coordination and oversight of the implementation of family violence laws and the establishment in each judicial circuit of a Community Task Force on Violence.

In order to foster a coordinated community response, task forces establish committees to address barriers that victims face white attempting to become safe and also closes gaps which offenders may slip through.

In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month this October, the Fulton County Family Violence Task Force is taking steps to ensure that everybody knows the signs of domestic violence and the hotline number to call for help.

Be aware of the following red flags that may signal domestic violence:

  • Talks about their partner’s temper, jealousy or possessiveness
  • Isolated from friends and family or unable to see you alone
  • Frequently absent from home or work
  • Receives an unusually high number of calls or texts from their partner
  • Has injuries they can’t explain or the explanations given don’t make sense
  • Wears clothing that might be covering injuries

If you recognize any of these signs, ask the person if he or she feels safe at home, and then refer them to the Georgia Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-33-HAVEN- 1-800-334-2836.  Domestic violence is everyone’s problem. Make it your business to get involved.
