Fulton Health Services Launches F.A.I.R. to Address Asthma Awareness | Print |

Asthma is a serious, costly, but controllable chronic disease.  The Fulton County Department of Health Services is launching the Fulton Asthma Improvement and Reduction (F.A.I.R.) Initiative to focus on the state of asthma in Fulton County. According to the American Lung Association, 24,657 children and nearly 55,000 adults suffer from asthma in Fulton County.

On Tuesday, May 1, 2012 from 10:00am – 2:00pm, a kick-off panel discussion entitled “Asthma Awareness: Putting the Pieces Together” will take place to provide residents an opportunity to share perspectives on some of the most challenging issues surrounding asthma and to identify areas that would be best addressed through a unified, cooperative and collaborative effort.  The discussion will be held at the Aldredge Health Center located at 99 Jesse Hill Jr., Drive in Atlanta, GA 30315 (across from Grady Memorial Hospital).  REGISTRATION is required.  Seating is limited, interested persons or groups should call 404-613-3497 to reserve a space.

The F.A.I.R. Initiative was created as a result of a resolution sponsored by Vice Chair Emma I. Darnell that directed the County Manager and Director of Health Services to develop an Asthma Control Action Plan to address asthma-related disparities in Fulton County.

Vital statistics data demonstrates that the largest asthma-related death rates in Fulton County includes Districts 5, 6 and 7. There was more than a five-fold disparity between the highest and lowest asthma-related death rates by Commission Districts from 2004-2008 with District 6 having the highest rate and District 3 the lowest rate.

The F.A.I.R. kick-off panel discussion will raise awareness about asthma and allow participants to share strategies for improving asthma care throughout Fulton County. The strategies will focus on improving policies and reducing the health disparities associated with asthma.
