Fulton Fresh Recognized by ARC | Print |

The Fulton County Cooperative Extension Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market Program will be highlighted on July 10 at the CREATE Awards Breakfast sponsored by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) for its collaborative efforts to address the issue of “food deserts.”  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program will receive an honorable mention for its innovative methods of involving community organizations, academia and government to serve underserved communities identified as food deserts by the United States Department of Agriculture.

“We are excited to receive recognition from the Atlanta Regional Commission,” states Menia Chester, Director of Fulton County Cooperative Extension.  “The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market is in its second year of operation and it is an honor for us to be recognized for our efforts to assist residents and to address health disparities in Fulton County.”

Two mobile units allow Fulton County Cooperative Extension to assist residents with making healthier choices to live healthier lives.  The Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market program is provided at no cost to residents.  The program provides fresh produce and nutrition education to residents living in communities identified as food deserts, which are large geographic areas where mainstream grocery stores are scarce or missing.

The CREATE Local Government Awards are presented annually to recognize and honor outstanding cities and counties for innovation and best practices in five key service areas:  Community Involvement and Collaboration; Regional Prosperity and Economic Development; Environmental Sustainability; Application & Innovation in Technology; and Educational Excellence.
