World AIDS Day Draws Attention to Need for Increased Testing to Get to ZERO | Print |

In 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) awarded a $4.5 million grant to Fulton County to work collaboratively with DeKalb County to implement high impact HIV prevention programs in both Fulton and DeKalb Counties.

In recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1, 2013, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness and the DeKalb County Board of Health join forces to encourage residents to take control and get tested to learn their status as part of a world-wide effort to reach “ZERO New Infections, ZERO Discrimination and ZERO AIDS Related Deaths."

On December 2, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Fulton County will offer health education and free HIV and Syphilis testing at the Aldredge Health Center, 99 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, SE, Atlanta, GA 30303.

In DeKalb County, HIV testing will be offered December 2  from 8:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Scores All-Star Sports Bar, 2454 Wesley Chapel Rd, Decatur GA 30035; On December 5  from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the DCBOH/DeKalb Addiction Clinic, 440 Winn Way, Decatur, GA  30030; and from 10:00 a.m. to4:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 7 at The Gallery at South DeKalb Mall, 2801 Candler Road, Decatur, GA 30034.

Also on December 2, interested residents can also attend a community engagement session from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. to discuss how we can get to zero HIV/AIDS cases. The session will take place in the Assembly Hall at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 101 Jackson Street, Atlanta, GA 30312.

New infections continue at a far too high level, with an estimated 56,300 Americans becoming infected with HIV each year. The CDC estimates that nearly 1 in 5 with HIV are unaware they are infected.  Take control, get tested.
