Fulton County Cooperative Extension Adopt the ‘Georgia Living Wetland Exhibit’ at the Chattahoochee Nature Center | Print |

Fulton County Cooperative Extension along with the North Fulton Extension Master Gardeners and Extension Volunteers will provide expertise to care for the rare and wild plants growing in ‘Georgia's Living Wetland Exhibit’.

‘Georgia’s Wetland Exhibit’ features five types of wetlands found in Georgia: the Mountain Bog; the Piedmont Flood Plain; the Okefenokee Swamp; the Pitcher Plant Bog; and a Longleaf Pine and Wiregrass Community.   The challenge has always been maintaining it year round.

“I suggested to our North Fulton Master Gardeners and volunteers that we expand our horizons and provide our service to the Chattahoochee Nature Center,” stated Rolando Orellana, Fulton County Agriculture and Natural Resources Extension Agent. “We are looking forward to maintaining and enhancing the Center for the enjoyment of current and future generations.

‘Georgia's Living Wetland Exhibit’ is fragile and takes a fundamental understanding of botany to properly maintain the unique plant specimens that make up this outdoor classroom seen by visitors at the Chattahoochee Nature Center visitors daily. The wetland mitigation project, built in 2001 with funding from Isakson-Barnhart, a local developer, preserves endangered habitats.   It is used to educate visitors on the importance of protecting a vital part of the watershed, our wetlands.

Fulton County Cooperative Extension along with the North Fulton Master Gardener Extension and Volunteers will be a part of this on-going education to care for the unique plants that includes more than 200 species of native plants and trees from bogs to wiregrass habitats.
