Fulton Public Defender Selected By U.S. State Department to Train Public Defenders in Other Countries | Print |

The Fulton County Office of the Public Defender has been selected by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) to provide training and consultation to new and existing indigent defense programs in other countries.

Fulton County was among the first Public Defenders in the U.S. to be selected for this international initiative. Through a Memorandum of Understanding agreement, the Fulton County Public Defender team will train judges, prosecutors and other legal professionals from foreign governments.

“I am extremely honored that Fulton County Public Defender’s Office was among the first to be selected for this innovative program,” said Public Defender Vernon Pitts. “We feel that this speaks to the caliber of our attorneys and staff, and we look forward to being part of this groundbreaking initiative.”

The Public Defender’s Office will develop legal curricula and other instructional materials to the INL designed to train international personnel regarding the criminal justice system and protecting the constitutional rights of accused individuals. The Fulton County Public Defender’s Office will also produce and provide a final report to the INL at the conclusion of the project. The State Department will pay travel costs and other expenses.

This partnership will not only recognize Fulton County as an international model program for effective and efficient indigent defense, but it will also enable the Public Defender’s office to collaborate with other national criminal defense offices selected by the State Department to discuss various initiatives designed at improving the criminal justice system and ensuring the constitutional rights of all accused indigent persons.
