Gary Stiles Sworn In As Fulton County Police Chief | Print |

Gary D. Stiles was sworn in as Fulton County Chief of Police after serving 30 years with the department and working for the last 6 months as the department’s Interim Police Chief.

Stiles took the oath of office at a ceremony this morning at the Assembly Hall in Fulton County Government Center. The swearing-in comes a month after Fulton County Commissioners named Stiles as the sole finalist for the position of Police Chief.   His appointment was approved unanimously by the Board of Commissioners at its meeting on November 18, 2015.

“I am proud to serve as Chief of the Fulton County Police Department and humbled by the outpouring of support I have received from the community, Board of Commissioners, the County, and my colleagues in the State and Federal government,” says Chief Stiles.   “I look forward to strengthening my Department’s connection to all members of our community as we implement strategies to enhance our partnerships following the 21st Century Policing Model.”

Gary Stiles was named Interim Chief in April 2015 after working in the Fulton County Police Department for 30 years focusing on South Fulton County. He has spent the last ten years as Fulton County’s Assistant Police Chief.   During his tenure with Fulton, Stiles oversaw departmental day-to-day operations and was a critical liaison between the department and the community it serves.

During the 1996 Olympics, Stiles was involved in commanding the unit which managed crowd control and critical incidents.   Under his command, the Fulton County Police Department received its first “Superior” rating from the State of Georgia auditors in 1999.

Prior to his tenure with Fulton County, Chief Stiles worked as an officer with the Atlanta Police Department. Stiles is a graduate of the National FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, Mercer University Public Safety Leadership Institute, and the GILEE Delegation (Executive Law Enforcement exchange with Israel). Chief Stiles also serves as Chairman of the Badge of Honor Memorial Fund, a national organization that advocates on behalf of the families of slain law enforcement officers.
