World AIDS Day Observed December 1 -- FREE HIV Testing and Community Outreach at Aldredge Health Center | Print |

Join the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness as we observe the 28th commemoration of World AIDS Day Thursday, December 1st at the Aldredge Health Center.   Worldwide, 78-million people unite each year on the first of December to continue the fight against HIV/AIDS, to support those who are living with the illness and to remember those who have died.

“Although there have been advances in reducing HIV infections, there’s much more work to do,” says Dr. David Holland, Fulton Medical Administrator.   The Georgia Department of Public Health HIV Surveillance Summary illustrates the gravity of the problem in metro Atlanta in its 2014 report:

  • 66% of the 53,230 persons living with HIV infection in Georgia reside in the Atlanta Metropolitan Statistical Area;
  • 30% or 15,958 live in Fulton County.

Dr. Holland advocates PrEP--Pre-exposure prophylaxis—as an effective prevention tool.   When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection in persons at high risk of contracting HIV by 96-99%.”   Fulton County became the first health department in the southeast to offer PrEP in February 2016.   Dr. Holland says, “Fulton County is making great strides in our fight to end HIV/AIDS with 350 people being screened and more than 150 patients receiving PrEP since our clinic opened.”

“As we commemorate World AIDS Day and reflect on the tremendous toll that HIV has had globally, statewide and here in Fulton County, let’s take time to acknowledge the progress made in treatment, prevention and care.” exclaims Kathleen E. Toomey, M.D., M.P.H., Fulton County District Health Director.   “Together with me, please make a commitment that Fulton County will be AIDS-free and people will have access to quality care no matter in which area of the county they live,” Toomey further adds.

In observance of World AIDS Day, Fulton County is expanding its HIV testing and education activities at the Aldredge Health Center, 99 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, SE, Atlanta, GA 30303 (adjacent to Grady Hospital).   Free HIV testing will be available in the clinic beginning at 8:00 a.m., and the mobile clinic will be on site from 10:00a.m. – 3 p.m. There will be educational sessions on linkage to care and PrEP, condom demonstrations, trivia and prizes. This event is free and open to the public.  The Fulton County Health and Wellness Department will also support a number of community partners throughout Fulton County which are providing services.
