Fulton County Fire Rescue Improves Its Insurance Services Organization (ISO) Rating | Print |

A lower rating benefits property owner and businesses

The Fulton County Fire Rescue Department has announced that its efficient operation has resulted in a lower Insurance Service Organization (ISO) rating to a 3. Nationally, Fire Departments are inspected by ISO to determine its public protection classification which plays an important role in the underwriting process at insurance companies.

“We have been working hard to improve our ISO ratings because we know how a low rating will benefit the new City of South Fulton and its residents,” stated Chief Larry Few, Fulton County Fire Rescue Department. “It’s important because communities whose classification rating is lower may also get lower insurance rates.”

Most U.S. insurers use the classification as part of their decision-making when deciding what business to write, coverages to offer or prices to charge for homeowner or commercial property insurance. Classification ratings are Class 1 through 10, with 1 being the best rated. “We have gone from a rating of 4 to a 3 which is good,” stated Chief Few.

The ISO classification also provides fire agencies with a valuable benchmark tool when planning and budgeting. The most significant benefit of the ISO rating is its effect on losses. Data on insurance losses bears out that excellent fire protection means low fire losses.

The ISO inspection and review process includes the following components: Emergency communications system, firefighting capability, water supply systems including Fire Training Procedures, and community risk reduction programs.   "We are now beginning to address the issues surrounding obtaining an ISO rating of Class 1," stated Chief Few.
