Fulton County Board of Assessors Provides Direction on Next Steps for 2017 Property Assessments | Print |

During the June 15 meeting of the Fulton County Board of Assessors, the Board took several steps to address issues related to 2017 assessment notices.

The Board authorized the County Attorney to continue negotiations with State agencies to resolve challenges related to prior year tax digests, with a potential impact on the 2017 property tax digest.   Since this matter involves active litigation, the Board expects to provide additional details upon the finalization of negotiations.   Given the time sensitive nature of the matter, the Board seeks to complete negotiations as expeditiously as possible to resolve all of these related matters.

The Board also voted to direct Tax Assessors’ staff to take several additional measures related to 2017 assessments, including:

·                 have Tax Assessors’ website updated immediately so that taxpayers who have not received notices can review them online.

·                 reinstate frozen values that were removed due to the CPI exemption.

·                 send written communication within two weeks to applicants whose homestead exemptions remain incomplete, and complete input of all applications by June 30, 2017.

·                 for those taxpayers whose exemptions are completed by June 30, 2017 and whose exemptions are not reflected on their 2017 assessment notices, updated letters with new tax estimates will be issued.

·                 by June 30, review land tables and determine if there are any errors that would impact 2017 values.

·                 review all neighborhoods where gentrification is an issue to determine whether a methodology employed in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood is appropriate for other neighborhoods.

The Board of Assessors also encouraged residents to utilize the appeal process as provided by law, in cases where they feel that 2017 assessed values are higher than property owners feel are warranted.   Appeals may be submitted online at www.fultonassessor.org. The appeal deadline is July 10, 2017.

The Board of Assessors’ June 15 meeting may be viewed online via FGTV on the Fulton County website.
