Commissioner Joan P. Garner To Be Remembered with Walk and Health Fair | Print |
In observation of Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in memory of his colleague, Commissioner Marvin S. Arrington, Jr. will host the Joan P. Garner Walk & Health Fair.  The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 7, 2017, at 9 a.m. at the Oak Hill, Child, Family, and Adolescent Center; 2805 Metropolitan Parkway; Atlanta, GA 30315.
“Joan is gone too soon, but I want to ensure she is never forgotten as Fulton County's first Executive Sponsor of Health,” said Fulton County 5th District Commissioner Marvin S. Arrington, Jr. “Oak Hill is a facility that was once in her district, and is now in mine, so we believe this serves as the best location to commemorate her. I thank Judge Jane Morrison for allowing us to title the event the Annual Joan P. Garner Walk and Health Fair.”
The walk and health fair are being held in memory of the late 4th District Commissioner Joan P. Garner who lost her battle with breast cancer in April 2017.  Commissioner Garner joined the Board of Commissioners in 2011. As commissioner, she worked tirelessly to fight against health disparities and became our Executive Sponsor of the “All People Are Healthy” priority area.
She also co-founded the Fulton County Task Force on HIV/AIDS and championed numerous other health initiatives. Commissioner Garner was a Vice President of ACCG – Georgia’s County Association and served as past Chair of the National Association of Counties’ Healthy Counties Initiative Advisory Board, Chair of NACo’s Medicaid and Indigent Care Subcommittee, and as Chair of the Health Policy Committee.
In addition to the walk at the Oak Hill facility, participants can get valuable health information.  The event includes health screenings, wellness information and free giveaways on site.  Those planning to attend this event can RSVP at: https://fultoncomm5.nationbuilder.com/2017JoanGarnerWalk
