Fulton County Commissioners Approve Employment Partnership for Seniors with AARP Foundation | Print |

Senior Community Service Employment Internships focus on workforce preparedness for seniors

Fulton County Commissioners approved a partnership between the Department of Senior Services and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to assist seniors who face difficulties in finding employment.  The approval came during the June 6, 2018 Commission meeting.

The U.S. Department of Labor funds the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) and AARP administers the program that is designed to serve low-income persons who are 55 years old and older. Eligible individuals receive part-time community service positions, as interns, with a goal of transitioning to unsubsidized employment in the community.

Department of Senior Services Director Dr. Pamela Roshell expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership,  “Participating senior adults will  experience customized onboarding and  receive  job-specific  training  based on  titles  that are commensurate  to the skills and abilities that could lead to employment in the community.

The SCSEP Internship program project staff will manage the recruitment and determination of eligibility process for all interested intern participants. The AARP staff will work with various Fulton County department staff to determine any training opportunities that would be available in Fulton County Government. In preparation for this partnership, departments have developed proposed titles and internship training descriptions for the type of training that will be provided.   Some of the departments ready to participate in this program are Arts and Culture, Department of Real Estate Asset Management, Customer Service, Clerk to the Commission, Human Resources and the Ryan White program.

The Senior Services/AARP Foundation partnership to implement the SCSEP program supports the County's mission to enhance skills and improve the skills required to provide quality services and programs to the County’s citizens.   SCSEP also meets the requirements of the County’s Strategic Plan tenet to ensure that “All People Are Self Sufficient.
