Fulton County Health Services Encourages Tuberculosis Education | Print |

In recognition of World TB Day, the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness will sponsor a Tuberculosis Walk on Saturday, March 19, 2011 at Grant Park.  The department will also conduct information sessions on Thursday, March 24 at the Aldredge Health Center.  County residents are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities to gain valuable information about tuberculosis.

“Fulton County has always believed that education is crucial to controlling and eliminating tuberculosis,” says Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services.  “By providing education, we help residents learn the symptoms, effects and prevention of this disease.”

On March 19, 2011, the Communicable Disease and Prevention Branch will sponsor a walk from 9:30am – 12:00pm at Grant Park to raise awareness of the global epidemic of tuberculosis in the United States and abroad. Registration will take place at 8:00am.

On March 24, 2011, World TB Day, the Branch will offer health screenings and educational information from 10:00am – 3:00pm at the Aldredge Health Center located at 99 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive, SE, Atlanta (across from Grady Memorial Hospital).

In 2006, Fulton County experienced a 17.1 percent decline in the number of reported TB cases.  A portion of the decline is attributed to the systematic use of providing TB treatment through directly observed therapy (DOT) which is the standard of care for providing tuberculosis care.

First sponsored in 1982, World TB Day seeks to raise awareness about the devastating health and economic consequences of TB. TB remains a threat to the health and well being of people around the world.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of TB cases in the United States is on the decline.  In Georgia, the number of reported cases has also been declining.
