Statement - Jail Medical Contract | Print |

Fulton County has not made any determinations regarding the cause of the five unfortunate inmate deaths that occurred at Fulton County jails in recent months.  Investigations are proceeding according to established procedures for review of these types of cases.  Any disclosure, discussion, or speculation of information or circumstances surrounding these deaths without final review of this situation is highly inappropriate, unfair to the families, and can jeopardize the medical review process and other investigations which are ongoing.

Despite reports to the contrary, at its meeting on November 15, the Fulton County Commissioners did not vote to terminate the existing heath provider contract.  Rather, the parties had earlier mutually agreed to end their relationship effective December 31, 2017 and not exercise an option for an extension of the existing contract.  The Board of Commissioners did vote to approve a new provider of medical services starting in January of 2018.

In every instance, Fulton County Commissioners carefully evaluate our providers and their related contracts.  We regret any negative comments about Morehouse School of Medicine which may have occurred in public statements made by individuals who do not represent Fulton County.  Morehouse School of Medicine is one of Georgia‚Äôs valued institutions of higher education and has been an excellent community partner and highly respected health care service provider.  Its 42+ year commitment to serving vulnerable populations is well known and respected.  Morehouse School of Medicine has been fully cooperative.
